Ozuna Swinging a Hot Bat is Good for the Cards

by Aaron Mullins

Marcell Ozuna is a key member of the St. Louis Cardinals. The team needs him to perform in order to have a shot at an NL Central Division Title. Although he has a Gold Glove in his possession, his defensive ability might not account for much. But guess what?

Ozuna is hitting… really well. So well in fact that you can work around his defensive miscues. We all saw it the other night as the Cardinals were playing LA. Ozuna went full Spider-Man in the hopes of robbing KikĂ© Hernández of a Home Run. The effort was there… the execution however… was lacking.

We are finally getting to see the Ozuna we supposedly traded for. His 2018 season wasn’t bad, but it was disappointing considering what he was able to do in Miami in 2017. But Ozuna seems to have figured it out, and he is raking.

How well is he hitting? Well let’s take a look at that. Ozuna has played in 16 games this season and has a slash line of .290/.343/.726 which gives him an OPS of 1.029. He also has 8 home runs and 16 RBI’s to go along with that.

Marcell Ozuna has 8 home runs so far in 2019. It’s April 17th He hit his 8th home run last season on June 13th I like this Ozuna #STLCards #TimeToFly

Now of course we have to be ready for Ozuna to come back down to Earth a little bit, but can we not all admit this is a fantastic start? Thankfully he doesn’t have to use his acrobatics at the plate, but it might actually be a fun talking point. Ozuna has been crushing the ball early on in the year and there is nothing to show that he is slowing down. Frankly I don’t see him keeping up with his 76 home run pace, but we can all dream right?

I’m glad to see Ozuna off to such a good start. Like I mentioned earlier, he is a key piece for the Cardinals and they need him to perform. He is going into his free agent year and if he is able to perform like this for a majority of the year, I might have a change of heart on whether the Cardinals should extend him. Another thing worth mentioning is that some of his throws are looking a bit better. Remember I said some…

Last season the Cardinals weren’t able to get the production from Ozuna that the fans wanted and expected, but maybe he can make up for it this year. I think he can. Let’s go Birds!
