Billikens Keep Bronze Boot After 1-1 Draw

Saint Louis 1, SIUE 1
Friday, Sept. 21, 2018
St. Louis, Mo. (Hermann Stadium)

RECAP
The first Bronze Boot matchup in 20 years between Saint Louis and SIUE lived up to its billing on Friday, as the two teams played to a 1-1 draw in front of 4,903 energetic fans at SLU’s Hermann Stadium.

As the keeper of the Bronze Boot after SLU’s win the last time the game was played in 1998, the Billikens retain possession of the Joseph S. Carenza Sr. Trophy for at least another year. Saint Louis (3-1-3) also keeps its unbeaten streak alive at five games. SIUE moves to 4-1-2 on the year.

After a scoreless first half, SIUE got on the board in the 52nd minute when Lachlan McLean tapped home a ball off a corner kick.

That remained the score until late in the match, setting up a thrilling final two minutes that gave the nearly 5,000 fans exactly what they came to see. Anthony Brown, who had a goal waived off earlier in the half on an offside call, tallied the equalizer with exactly two minutes left in regulation. He pounced on a Leo Novaes rebound that was first saved by the SIUE keeper, then glanced off the crossbar.

Exactly one minute later, there were fireworks on the other end. SIUE was awarded a PK after SLU fouled an SIUE attacker in the box. McLean struck it, and SLU freshman keeper Seth Stiebel dove to his left to save the low shot.

The Billikens outshot the Cougars 27-4, including a 16-2 edge in the second half alone. SLU also had an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks.

SLU defender Lennart Hein was named the game’s MVP.

Saint Louis returns to action next Saturday when it heads to Dayton for the Atlantic 10 Conference opener. Game time at Dayton’s Baujan Field is 6 p.m. (CT).
