Redbirds Win Regular Season Home Finale

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Rehabbing Adam Wainwright combined with Tyler Lyons to shut out the Nashville Sounds (Athletics), 2-0, in the regular season home finale for the division champion Memphis Redbirds (80-53) Monday night at AutoZone Park.

With the win, the Redbirds finished the season 40-30 at AutoZone Park for 40-plus home wins in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 2010 and 2011.

Wainwright made an injury rehab starts on assignment from the St. Louis Cardinals, and he allowed three hits in 4.0 shutout innings while striking out four. He tossed 38 of his 61 pitches for strikes. Tyler Lyons was outstanding in relief after Wainwright, working 5.0 innings and giving up just one hit and one walk. He struck out seven.

Memphis scored two runs in the third inning to account for the game’s scoring. Randy Arozarena singled, stole second, and scored on a Rangel Ravelo single, and Lane Thomas walked, moved to second on Ravelo’s single and third on a field error, and then came home on an Alex Mejia base knock.

Mejia finished 2-for-4, and Arozarena was 2-for-3. Arozarena swiped two bases in the game and has 17 on the year.

The Redbirds’ regular season finishes with seven games on the road at Round Rock and Nashville starting tomorrow. The Redbirds will open their home playoff slate on Friday, Sept. 7, which is Game 3 of the first round.
