Birds Grab Early Lead, But Can’t Hang On

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – The Memphis Redbirds (76-52) dropped the second game of their series against the New Orleans Baby Cakes (Miami) 4-2, Wednesday night in New Orleans.

Memphis jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the first, but they could not hang on for the win. With the loss, New Orleans has secured the season series victory over Memphis.

In the first, Justin Williams launched a two-run home run, his third with Memphis this season. New Orleans notched a run to cut into the lead in the bottom of the frame before taking the lead with three runs in the third inning.

Jake Woodford took the loss for the Redbirds. The righty went five innings, allowing four runs on six hits and four walks, while striking out two batters. He is now 4-4 with a 4.42 ERA with Memphis. John Brebbia, Tommy Layne, and Edward Mujica combined to throw the final three innings. They allowed just one hit and one walk, while striking out five batters.

Offensively, along with Williams’ home run, Ramon Urias and Edmundo Sosa led the way, both recording two hits. Urias went 2-for-4, scoring once and extending his hitting streak to six games. Sosa also went 2-for-4 in the game, recording two doubles. Lane Thomas and Carson Kelly had the other two hits in the game for Memphis. They went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

The Redbirds and Baby Cakes will play one more game to finish off the season series, before the ‘Birds return to AutoZone Park on Friday for the final regular-season series against Nashville. For more information on single-game tickets, visit www.memphisredbirds.com.
