Grizzlies Lose On Tenth-Inning Walk-Off

MARION, Ill. — The Gateway Grizzlies took a 5-2 lead in the fourth inning and a 6-5 lead in the 10th inning Saturday night, but allowed a two-run double in the bottom of the 10th and lost, 7-6, to the Southern Illinois Miners at Rent One Park.

Gateway (35-49) lost only its eighth game this year after leading following the fifth inning. Both of the Grizzlies’ wins this week have come after they trailed following the fifth, even though they were 3-36 in those situations before Wednesday,

Saturday marked the Grizzlies’ eighth walk-off loss of 2018; three walk-off losses have come at Rent One Park.

Kevin Simmons (0-3) took the loss in relief.

Shane Mardirosian was 1-for-3 with three walks, three steals and two runs. Blake Brown had two hits and drove in two. He also walked stole a base. Mitch Piatnik doubled twice and stole home on a pick-off attempt to first base.

Gateway stole six bases, four of which were in the first two innings.

Joe Hauser made his Grizzlies debut with five runs allowed (four earned) over 5 2/3 innings and four strikeouts. Josh Glick and Colton Freeman combined for 2 1/3 shutout innings out of the bullpen between Hauser and Simmons.

Gateway and Southern Illinois will finish their three-game series with a rubber match Sunday at 5:05 p.m.
