Thomas’ Three-Run Home Run Powers Redbirds

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Lane Thomas hit a three-run home run to the opposite field in the bottom of the third inning, and the Redbirds’ bullpen locked down to secure a 3-2 win over the New Orleans Baby Cakes (Marlins) in the series finale Thursday night at AutoZone Park.

Thomas’ homer was his third of the season with the Redbirds and accounted for all of Memphis’ scoring. After Tyler Lyons started and allowed two runs in 3.1 innings, Chris EllisTyler Webb, and Andrew Morales finished the ballgame in efficient, scoreless fashion.

Ellis struck out five in his 3.2 innings, including the side in the fifth, and he induced a double play to end the seventh. Webb needed just nine pitches for the eighth inning, and Morales got a strikeout in the ninth to pick up his sixth save of the year.

There were only eight combined hits in the game. Tommy EdmanWilfredo Tovar, and Randy Arozarena had Memphis’ other three in addition to Thomas. Tovar’s was a triple, and Arozarena’s went for two bases. Edman now has a hit in four-straight and five of the six he has played with the Redbirds.

The win snapped Memphis’ four-game losing streak.

Memphis remains home through Sunday to host the Round Rock Express (Rangers), with the series opener tomorrow night at 7:05. For more information on single-game tickets, visit www.memphisredbirds.com.
