Redbirds Upended in Series Opener against Fresno

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – The Fresno Grizzlies (Astros) jumped out to an early 8-0 lead and powered to a 9-3 win over the first-place Memphis Redbirds (70-42) in the series opener Saturday night at AutoZone Park.

Fresno (64-48) had five doubles and a home run in the ballgame, with the homer being a grand slam in the third inning.

Justin Williams and Lane Thomas each went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Redbirds. Thomas has a hit in all six games he has played with the Redbirds with three two-hit games and a three-hit contest, and he has doubled in three-straight games. Williams hit his first home run in the St. Louis Cardinals organization with a solo shot in the eighth inning.

Adolis Garcia extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a 1-for-4 outing, including an RBI groundout. He is hitting .419 (26-62) during the streak with 18 runs scored, eight doubles, a triple, nine home runs, and 23 RBI.

Kevin Herget took the loss for Memphis, giving up eight runs on eight hits in 5.0 innings. Dominic Leone made his second injury rehab appearance and pitched a scoreless sixth, Conner Greene allowed a run in 2.0 innings of work, and Giovanny Gallegos worked a scoreless ninth to close the game.

Memphis was 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
