Redbirds Fall Behind Early, Lose at Salt Lake

by

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The first-place Memphis Redbirds (65-38) fell behind 7-1 before clawing back to within two runs, but the Salt Lake Bees (Angels) took the second game of the three-game series Wednesday night in Salt Lake City, 7-5.

Oscar Mercado was 2-for-5 with a double, two runs, and two RBI, and three other Redbirds drove in a run in the game. Seven Redbirds had at least one of the team’s eight hits in the contest.

All-Star Dakota Hudson started and was lifted in the second inning, and four Redbirds relievers combined to finish the game. Conner Greene tossed 3.2 innings of relief, and Tommy Layne and Edward Mujica threw the final 2.1 innings in scoreless fashion. Tyler Webb allowed three runs on four hits in 1.0 inning directly following Hudson.

Salt Lake scored five runs in the second inning to create a lead that proved too much for Memphis to overcome.

The Redbirds left two runners on base in both the sixth and seventh innings as they were trying to finish the comeback.

Tyler O’Neill, who had five home runs in the last two games, was 1-for-2 with two walks and a run scored. He also had an outfield assist at second base.

The Redbirds finish their series at Salt Lake tomorrow night at 8:05 (CT), before heading to Las Vegas for four games through Monday. For more information on single-game tickets, visitwww.memphisredbirds.com.
