The St. Louis Surge women’s professional basketball franchise returns to their local court this weekend and looks to keep their undefeated home streak intact.
The Surge (6-2) hosts the Georgia Stampede Saturday at Washington University’s Field House (330 Big Bend Blvd. – St. Louis, MO). Tipoff is at 7:05 p.m.
The 2014 and 2016 national champions of the Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League (WBCBL) have impressed the home crowds with their 3-0 output that includes last Saturday’s 88-59 win over the Toledo Threat.
In the contest, double-digit offensive performances were recorded by Brittany Carter (15 points), Kelsey McClure (14 points) and Rebecca Harris (11 points) while Sharise Williams had a standout night in rebounds (eight offense/six defense for 14 overall.)
The Surge’s attack will also be propelled by starters Jaleesa Butler (14.9 PPG) and Kristi Bellock (14.5 PPG). Forwards Mariah King, Laura Johnson and Leti Lerma will contribute quality minutes to supplement while guards Bianca Latham and Jordan Jones add depth in the back court.
As the Surge have already completed their WBCBL Midwest Division schedule, where they finished 2-1, they are using this game against the Stampede and their July 15 home finale against Music City Icons, both members of the governing body’s Atlantic Division, to gain victories and traction with the ultimate goal of reaching the WBCBL post-season tournament later this summer.
St. Louis’ Saturday opponent, Georgia Stampede (3-5) notched their second straight win this past weekend in a 94-47 victory over WBCBL Carolinas member Beaufort (SC) Bison. Their 25-8 third quarter output helped secure the win.
Starting forward Nicole Collins and guard Deundria Clark lead the Stampede with double-digit scoring.
The Surge traveled to the Peachtree State in mid-June and toppled the Stampede 100-58.
A two-game series sweep and a continuance of home perfection is the goal at the final buzzer.
Tickets at the door are $10 for adults, $8 for students with ID and free for children five and under.
