Gateway Falls To Windy City In Opener

SAUGET, Ill. — The Gateway Grizzlies took the first lead Monday night on a Paul Russo RBI single in the second inning, but surrendered the next four runs in a row to the Windy City ThunderBolts in a 4-1 loss at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.

Gateway (19-29) dropped its sixth straight, the first four by one run each and the last two by three runs apiece.

Windy City (16-29) knocked out nine hits, including a two-strike, two-out, two-run home run from Riley Krane in the sixth inning.

Mike Elwood (4-3) took the loss. He allowed four runs (all earned) in six-plus innings and struck out nine. Connor Leedholm threw two scoreless innings of relief and Josh Glick added one of his own.

Russo had the only two-hit night for the Grizzlies.

Gateway and Windy City will play game two of their three-game series Tuesday at 7:05 p.m.
