‘Birds Score Early and Often To Take Series-Opener

by

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – The Memphis Redbirds (39-27) scored in each of the first three innings to jump out to an early lead, and beat the Albuquerque Isotopes (Colorado Rockies) 11-0, Wednesday night at Isotopes Park.

Memphis scored runs in each of the first three innings to back starter Dakota Hudson, who continued his dominant stretch over the Isotopes. Tyler O’Neill drove in the first Memphis run with his first home run of the game with two outs in the first inning. O’Neill and Patrick Wisdom went back-to-back in the ninth inning to extend the Memphis lead. O’Neill now has four multi-home run games with the Redbirds this season, and has 18 bombs between Memphis and St. Louis.

In the second inning, Rangel Ravelo and Adolis Garcia went back-to-back, each hitting their seventh bombs of the year to extend the lead. In the third inning, the ‘Birds broke out for four runs, sending all nine men to the plate and notching five hits and a walk in the inning.

In the sixth, Oscar Mercado tripled in Wilfredo Tovar and scored on Max Schrock’s sac fly to continue the scoring. The top eight batters in the Memphis lineup all recorded at least one hit on the night. Mercado (2-for-4), O’Neill (2-for-5), Ravelo (3-for-5), and Tovar (2-for-4) all collected multiple hits for Memphis, while seven different players notched at least one RBI.

Hudson was lights-out once again. The righty tossed 8.0 shutout innings, allowing just four hits and four walks, while striking out six batters to lower his ERA to 2.18. Hudson is now 5-2 in his last seven games with a 1.16 ERA since May 1, the best mark in the PCL.

Memphis and Albuquerque will battle in game two of the series tomorrow at 7:35 p.m. The ‘Birds will be on the road until June 21 when they return to AutoZone Park for a four-game set against New Orleans.
