SLU’s King Taken In 35th Round By The Diamondbacks

Saint Louis University Baseball shortstop Alex King was selected in the 35th round of the 2018 MLB Draft, becoming the 34th player in team history to be drafted into a Major League Baseball franchise.

King, the power-hitting shortstop led the 2018 team in home runs with 15 on the season, which was also the top mark in the Atlantic 10. Over the course of his career, the Lenexa, Kan., native is third on the Saint Louis All-Time list for games played and started with 223 as he started every game he played in his career.

The Billiken shortstop finished his collegiate career second on the All-Time list at Saint Louis with 622 career assists, fifth in total at-bats with 778, third in runs scored with 55 to name just a few of his top 10 finishes in the history books. He finished in the top 10 of nine career categories including home runs, walks, runs and total bases.

King was one of the most dangerous hitters in the Atlantic 10 in his senior season and recorded his 15th and final home run of the year at Swayze Field at Ole Miss against Missouri State in the 2018 NCAA Oxford Regional. For his efforts, he was named to the All-Conference First Team in the Atlantic 10 in 2018.

King was the fourth player in Billiken history to be drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks, joining Grant Nelson (2013), Bill Musselman (2007) and Tom Hausladen (1997).
