Grizzlies Comeback Falls Short In Defeat

by

SAUGET, Ill. — The Gateway Grizzlies battled back after falling behind 7-0 in the first inning Saturday night, but they couldn’t come all the way back in an 8-7 loss to the Florence Freedom at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.

Florence (11-14) scored seven runs on three hits, four walks and a hit batsman in the first.

Trevor Lubking (0-1) took the loss in an inning of work for the Grizzlies (11-15).

Artemis Kadkhodaian scored on a Matt Gonzalez RBI groundout to get Gateway on the board in the first. Kadkhodaian started the game with a single — Saturday marked the fourth straight game in which he has reached base to open the Grizzlies’ first inning.

Gateway scored again in the fourth inning on a Justin Ellison solo homer — his second home run in as many home games with the Grizzlies — and racked up five runs in the fifth, when Gonzalez, Ellison, Cody Livesay and Trae Santos all supplied RBIs.

Josh Glick worked two perfect innings of relief out of the Grizzlies’ bullpen to drop his season ERA to 0.59 in 15 1/3 innings pitched with 17 strikeouts.

Livesay had three hits; Kadkhodaian and Terry McClure added two apiece.

Gateway and Florence will play game three of their four-game set Sunday at 6:05 p.m. at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
