(OVERLAND PARK, KS) In their first full-length sanctioned match in Women’s Premier Soccer League (WSPL) play Saturday afternoon, St. Louis Lions WPSL fell to KC Athletics Pride 3-0 at Shawnee Mission South High School.

Anchored by a two-goal performance by Cece Kizer and a stubborn defense, the Pride’s three-goal victory pushes them to the top of the Central Region’s Heartland Conference.

St. Louis (0-1) played the defending conference champs tight early and Maddie Pokorny’s shot at the 18-minute mark almost gave the Lions the early lead.

The Pride netted their first point at the 29:00 mark with Hannah Miller’s first goal of the season.

St. Louis tried their best to tie the score by intermission but was unsuccessful and the one goal lead was retained by the host.

Lions goalie Olivia Silverman made great saves as the second half progressed and at the 57th minute, St. Louis still craved the equalizer.

That attempt was thwarted as the Pride made the score 2-0 two minutes later with Kizer’s first goal of the match. She later added a second at the 83-minute mark.

Meanwhile, the Pride’s stingy defense preserved the shutout victory for goalie Anna Lillig.

St. Louis’ next home game at the Tony Glavin Soccer Complex is on Sunday, June 10 versus Des Moines Menace. Tickets are $10 apiece for adults and $5 for children ages 6-18.
