Saint Louis University head women’s basketball coach Lisa Stone has announced the hiring of Kat Martin as assistant coach. Martin, who most recently served one season as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, brings 11 years of collegiate coaching experience to the Billiken program.

“I am pleased to announce the addition of Kat Martin to our women’s basketball coaching staff and the Billiken family,” Stone said. “Kat is regarded as one of the hardest-working recruiting coordinators in the Midwest. She is very well-connected in the region and works tirelessly to recruit top-level student-athletes.

“We are excited that Kat is bringing her talent, personality and desire to win to Saint Louis,” Stone said. “She will be an asset to our program as we continue our mission to win championships.”

“I’m honored by Coach Stone’s offer to join the Billiken family,” Martin said. “She has done a tremendous job building Saint Louis University women’s basketball to national recognition, and to be part of something so special and prestigious is very exciting. I’m very grateful to be involved in her championship vision, her commitment to excellence, and her drive to empower student-athletes to attain more than they thought possible.”

At UMKC, Martin spearheaded a recruiting effort that resulted in the signing of the Western Athletic Conference’s top-rated 2018 class according to All-Star Girls Report. The group of 11 student-athletes included three junior college All-Americans. Martin also helped guide UMKC to fifth place in the conference standings, the Kangaroos’ highest finish in their five years of WAC membership.

Martin spent four years as assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Southern Illinois University. She helped lead the Salukis to a 12-win improvement in her second season (2014-15) and to a 20-win campaign the following year. The 2015-16 team earned the first of two consecutive Women’s Basketball Invitational bids, returning SIU to postseason play for the first time in nine years.

Martin coached nine Missouri Valley All-Conference selections at SIU. Among the players signed during her tenure were the 2018 MVC Freshman of the Year and three other MVC All-Freshman selections.

Martin began her coaching career with a six-year stint as associate head coach at Kishwaukee College. She helped lead the Kougars to a .668 winning percentage (133-65), a fourth-place national tournament finish in 2012, three Arrowhead Conference championships, three Region IV titles and five NJCAA Division II national top-20 rankings.

Martin is a 2007 cum laude graduate of Trinity International University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in sport and wellness management as well as All-Conference honors and numerous academic accolades. She holds a master’s degree in sport management, graduating magna cum laude from Northern Illinois University in 2010.
