Grizzlies’ Matt Hearn Signs With Rockies

by

SAUGET, Ill. — Grizzlies outfielder Matt Hearn, who hit a team-leading .331 in 2017 and set a single-season franchise record with 30 steals, signed with the Colorado Rockies’ organization Monday.

Hearn is the first Grizzlie to sign with an MLB organization this season; he is the 44th in the history of the franchise.

Through 15 games this season, Hearn posted a .305 batting average with a home run — his first as a professional — and six RBIs. He also swiped three bases and played his typically outstanding defense in center field.

Hearn joined the Grizzlies in May 2017. After a pedestrian first two weeks with Gateway, he caught fire. He hit in 54 of his final 60 games, including a 20-game hitting streak from June 24 to July 21 that came up three games short of the Grizzlies’ franchise record.

The San Jose, Calif., native played two years at Mission Junior College before he was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 24th round of the 2016 MLB Draft.

Hearn finished his Grizzlies tenure with a 10-for-26 (.385) week with a double, a homer, four RBIs and two runs scored.

Gateway’s record-setting center fielder is expected to be assigned to the Class-A Asheville Tourists of the South Atlantic League.
