Flaherty Dazzles As ‘Birds Top Dodgers

by

OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma – The Memphis Redbirds (22-12) beat the Oklahoma City Dodgers (22-9) 7-2, Wednesday afternoon at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City, Okla. Jack Flaherty dominated the Dodgers, striking out a career-high 13 batters.

Flaherty, the Cardinals’ No. 2 prospect, pitched 6.2 innings of two-run ball, and both runs were driven in by Donovan Solano. After the Dodgers scored a run in the third, Flaherty proceeded to strikeout the final batter in the inning before striking out the side in the fourth and fifth innings to rattle off seven-straight strikeouts. After the run scored in the third, he sent down 11-straight batters, eight by strikeout. Of the final 16 batters he faced, 13 recorded outs, 10 of which were strikeouts.

The offense backed Flaherty early to give him his fourth win of the season. Wilfredo Tovar led off the third inning with his third homer of the season to tie the game at one before the ‘Birds rattled off two more runs. Two batters after Tovar, Flaherty helped himself with a walk, moved to third on Oscar Mercado’s double, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Tyler O’Neill to take the 2-1 lead. Luke Voit hit an RBI double to score Mercado one batter later.

In the fourth, Adolis Garcia  led off with his fourth homer of the season to extend the Memphis lead. The Redbirds added another run in the fifth when Voit notched his second double of the day, and scored one batter later on a triple from Yairo Munoz.

Andrew Morlaes and Edward Mujica came in to relieve Flaherty, and shut down the Dodgers to seal the win. Morales pitched 1.1 innings, blanking the Dodgers, and Mujica pitched the final frame, allowing just one hit.

The Redbirds and Dodgers will play again tomorrow at 7:05 p.m., and the Memphis road trip will continue through Friday at Oklahoma City. The Redbirds return to AutoZone Park for four games starting on Saturday the 12th. For more information on single-game tickets and ticket mini-memberships, visit www.memphisredbirds.com.
