Cardinals Fall in Opener 9-4

by Aaron Mullins

Today is a day Carlos Martinez would probably like to forget.

The 26 year old right-hander surrendered 5 runs (4 earned) over 4.1 IP. The damage could have been worse as he had 11 runners reach base. Most of those coming from 6 walks. Carlos didn’t seem to find the zone tonight, only managing 54 strikes on 90 pitches.

His counterpart Noah Syndergaard gave up 4 ER as well over 6.0 IP, but had 10 strikeouts on top of his performance.

The Cardinals main bright spot came from 1B Jose Martinez who was 3-4 with a HR in the 6th inning. Jose did have a throwing error earlier in the game.

The Cardinals did have scoreless outings from Brett Cecil, Mike Mayers, Jordan Hicks, and Sam Tuivailala, but the damage was done early between Martinez’s and Bowman’s rough outings. The Cardinals also walked more batters than they struck out (9 BBs – 8 Ks) This is compared to the Mets staff who walked just one while striking out 15.

Walks were obviously a big issue in the game for the Redbirds. This is something I imagine they will focus on moving forward.

Next game – 3/31 @ Citi Field 12:10 PM CT

Probable Starters

St. Louis – Michael Wacha

NY Mets – Jacob DeGrom
