THE BASICS
• Sadie Wise hit her team-leading ninth home run of the season, and Maddie Baalman and Kallen Lovelesscombined on a six-hitter as Saint Louis defeated Murray State 5-4 Tuesday afternoon in the Billikens’ home opener.
• SLU improved to 14-11, while Murray State fell to 9-18.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• For an eighth time in 11 games, Saint Louis scored in the first inning. Wise drilled a three-run shot to give the Billikens an early advantage.
• After Murray State plated an unearned run in the second, SLU got the marker back in the bottom of the inning on Mackenzie Lawson’s second homer of the season.
• The Bills made it 5-1 in the third on Allie Macfarlane’s sacrifice fly.
• Murray State drew closer with two runs in the fourth, and the Racers made it a one-run affair with an unearned tally in the sixth. But Loveless pitched around an error and stranded the potential tying and go-ahead runs.
BILLIKEN NOTABLES
• Wise now has sole possession of the Saint Louis single-season record for home runs by a freshman. She increased her team-leading RBI total to 27 and also collected her team-high 10th double.
• Kat Lane was 2-for-3.
• Lauren Lomax and Alyssa Tarquinio collected a single apiece.
• Baalman improved to 9-7. She tossed four innings, struck out two and allowed two earned runs, three hits and two walks.
• Loveless pitched the final three innings and registered her first save. She fanned six, did not walk a batter and yielded no earned runs and three hits.
