This Saturday at 7 p.m., the St. Louis Surge women’s professional basketball franchise looks to keep its perfect record intact as they host the Garland Hoyas at Washington University’s Field House.
The defending national champions of the Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League (WBCBL) improved to 7-0 with last Saturday’s 113-48 home victory over the Louisville Fillies. In the overwhelming win, seven St. Louis players scored double-digits, paced by veteran Rebecca Harris’ 18 points.
Returning players Leah Cotton and Jaleesa Butler and newcomers Patrice Butler and Krisiti Bellock each respectively scored 17 on the night while rookie Jordan Jones and Kyrsten Crawford contributed a dozen apiece. Sharise Williams, Bianca Latham and Tori Waldner also added quality minutes in the victory.
As reigning champs of the WBCBL, the Surge is fully aware that they have to be focused every time they hit the hard court.
“We know that everyone is gunning for us,” said Harris, the team’s leading scorer that possesses a 20-point-per-game average. “Everyone else is working hard to beat us. Each game, we are fine tuning no matter what the score is. We want to focus on our assignments.”
Saturday’s opponent, Texas-based Garland Hoyas, competes in the WBCBL Mid-South Division and currently sports a 0-3 record following a two-point loss to the Dallas Crest two weeks ago.
The Surge is continuing their five-game local docket at Wash U in the two-step with the Texans and a eighth straight win is craved.
“We’re going to bring our A-game,” said Harris of Saturday’s clash with the Hoyas. “We going to continue to execute the things that we have worked on and hopefully the turnout will be what we want it to be.”
Tickets at the door are $10 for adults and $8 for students with middle, high school or collegiate ID while children five and under get in free.
The Surge is promoting the evening as “Heroes Night,” where veteran and public service members receive $5 admission.
