Weaver Whiffs Career-High 11 in 4-1 Redbirds Win

by

METAIRIE, Louisiana – Luke Weaver struck out a career-high 11 in 5.0 shutout innings of two-hit work Monday night, providing the catalyst to a 4-1 Memphis Redbirds (35-22) win over the New Orleans Baby Cakes.

Weaver, who was named the Pacific Coast League Player of the Month earlier on Monday, struck out the side twice in his 5.0 innings of work, with just four of his outs coming via something other than a strikeout. Weaver one-upped fellow hurler Mike Mayers, who previously set the team high for strikeouts in a game this season on Saturday with 10.

The right-hander improved to 6-1 on the season with the win and lowered his ERA to 1.84.

Harrison Bader had two hits and drove in a pair of runs for the Redbirds, and Nick Martini was 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored. Luke Voit was on base four times with a hit, a hit by pitch, and two walks.

Weaver struck out the side in the second, all looking, and the fourth, all swinging, to help the Redbirds maintain a 2-0 lead after four innings. Memphis opened the scoring in the top of the first when Voit singled home Todd Cunningham and added another in the third on a Bader RBI single, scoring Martini.

Bader again singled home Martini in the fifth to make it 3-0 Redbirds, and Memphis erased a sixth-inning New Orleans run with a fourth tally in the top of the seventh, which came on a Patrick Wisdom sacrifice fly.

Zach Phillips surrendered that lone New Orleans run in the sixth inning, before Mark Montgomery and Sam Tuivailala combined for 3.0 shutout innings of work to finish the win. Memphis hurlers struck out 15 Baby Cakes on the night.

The game was delayed for 1:47 prior to first pitch due to rain.

The Redbirds and Baby Cakes play the second game of their four-game series tomorrow night at 7:00. Memphis returns to AutoZone Park on Friday to continue a period of 15-of-19 games at home.
