Kolten Wong Placed On DL; Paul DeJong Called Up From Memphis

by Press Release

The St. Louis Cardinals announced prior to this afternoon’s game in Denver that they have placed second baseman Kolten Wong (left elbow strain) on the 10- day disabled list, retroactive to May 27, and purchased rookie infielder Paul DeJong from Memphis (AAA).   DeJong (pronounced de-YONG), who will be making his Major League debut, has been assigned uniform no. 11.

DeJong, 23, was the Cardinals 4th round draft selection (131st player overall) in the June, 2015 amateur draft out of Illinois State University.

The right-handed hitting DeJong was batting .294 with a team-high 11 HR’s (5th in the Pacific Coast League) and 31 RBI in his 46 games played with Memphis this season.  DeJong has played 37 games at shortstop this season, four at 2nd base and three at 3rd base.

The 6-0, 195-pound DeJong was named to the Texas League (AA) All-Star last season in his first year at Springfield, leading the S-Cards in round-trippers with 22 (2nd in the Cardinals organization), while also adding 29 doubles and 73 RBI.

Wong was batting .278 with 11 doubles, one HR and 16 RBI in his 41 games played this season.  He left the game on May 20 with left elbow discomfort and did not start again until last Wednesday (May 24) at Los Angeles.
