Cards Outlast Mets in Offensive Showcase

by

ST. LOUIS – Both the New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals put their offense on full display Sunday afternoon, with St. Louis edging New York in a shootout, 14-11, at First Data Field in Port St. Lucie, FL.

The Cardinals and Mets combined for 34 hits in the game, with 14 of those going for extra bases.

New York jumped out early in the contest thanks to a Yoenis Cespedes home run in the bottom of inning number one. Cespedes would finish his day 2-2 with 2 runs scored.

The Cardinals would respond with 7 unanswered runs. Jose Martinez launched his third long ball of spring training to give St. Louis a 3-1 lead. An Aledmys Diaz RBI single and a Harrison Bader base-clearing triple put the Cards on top 7-1.

Six Cardinal runs in the fifth and sixth innings gave St. Louis a 13-4 advantage, but the Mets would make things interesting with 6 runs in the seventh off of Cardinals RP Brett Cecil to cut the lead to 13-10.

Anthony Garcia tallied the 14th and final run of the game for St. Louis on his 8th inning solo HR.

Both Martinez and Bader combined for 6 hits in 8 at-bats for the Cardinals, including 7 RBI.

Cardinals 2B Greg Garcia had a big day at the plate, going 3 for 3, scoring 3 runs, and recording 2 RBI.

Dexter Fowler continued his solid spring, contributing a 2-RBI double.

Worth Noting:

Cardinals righty Trevor Rosenthal experienced soreness in his right lat muscle after tossing an inning against the Nationals this past Friday. Rosenthal was scheduled to start for St. Louis in Monday’s upcoming game against the Twins.

Up Next:

St. Louis will head to CenturyLink Sports Complex in Fort Myers, FL Monday to take on the Minnesota Twins. John Gant will make the start in place of Trevor Rosenthal (aforementioned lat soreness). First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 CT.
