Blues Howling into Detroit

by

The St. Louis Blues are in Detroit tonight facing the Red Wings.  This is a rivalry that goes back to the days when, year after year, these two teams always seemed to be battling for the Central Division title.  Before the resurgence of the Blackhawks and the move that put Detroit in the Eastern Conference.  Nonetheless, this game will feel like a rivalry again, the Blues need to continue this hot streak they are on while facing the last place team in the East.  Do not rest in this game with all of the emotions that will be driving the Red Wings tonight.  After attending the funeral of their late owner this morning, they will come ready to play.  The Blues have a profound opportunity in front of them in the next 5 days.  They play the Canucks, Sabres, and Panthers after tonight’s game at Joe Louis Arena, all of which are 10th place or worse their respective conferences.  The Blues have been riding energy, momentum, and outstanding goaltending since the coaching change, going 6-4 in their last 10 and are currently on a 4 game win streak.  These next 4 games are going to go a long way in deciding what is done at the trade deadline, which is only 2 weeks away.  What does the organization do if they end up 4-2, or 5-1 for the rest of February?

The injuries have come into play as well.  Tonight the Blues will be loaded with Chicago Wolves players and will feature a complete line of youngsters, with Agostino, Barbashev, and Paajarvi making up the 3rd line in tonight’s match-up, and Megan centering the 4th line.  On one side, you have major injuries to starters like Stastny and Fabbri, but on the other hand, this can be exciting.  Having youngsters coming up and showing what they can do is like getting a glimpse of the future Blues helping the current Blues tread water until the stars return to the lineup.  These kids have shown a lot of grit and talent while they’re up and have given the club a spark with their youth and excitement with  their energy.  If they continue to improve and prove themselves for the rest of February, they could also play a huge role in the deadline decisions.  To me, this is the top story of tonight’s game.  Not if they can win the game, but can these kids make up a formidable line to test the NHL players they will oppose.

The future of this club looks to be showing itself sooner than expected and with, or without deadline moves, the future of this club looks to have the making of a Howling success.
