After finishing second at the recent Midwest Divisional championship of the Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League (WBCBL) post-season docket, the St. Louis Surge had to wait with baited breath to see if it would receive an at-large berth to the governing body’s eight-team national tournament held two weekends from now.

The locals can now exhale a sigh of relief as it has obtained a coveted slot and now possesses an opportunity to re-enter its extension of the playoffs fully re-charged.

This week, the Surge (10-2) received entry to the WBCBL’s finale, held in San Antonio, Texas on August 6-7, netted the tourney’s seventh seed and faces second-seeded Conyers Rockets (9-2) in Saturday morning’s quarterfinal round.

St. Louis, the WBCBL’s 2014 national champs and last year’s national runner-up, fell to Flyers Pro Elite, 91-76, at last Saturday’s Midwest tourney finale held at UMSL’s Mark Twain Building.

However, the slate is wiped completely clean and the Surge now receives newfound life. Their quarterfinal opponent, the Georgia-based Conyers Rockets, topped the standings of the WBCBL’s Smoky Mountain Division.

A preview of the Surge’s quest to re-claim the WBCBL’s national trophy will be featured next week at Arch City Sports.
