Grizzlies Win Series Behind Solid Pitching

by
Traverse City, Mich. – The Gateway Grizzlies beat the Traverse City Beach Bums 4-1 on Wednesday evening at Wuerfel Park for a second straight win on the road. Gateway (29-29) moved back to .500 and will look to sweep Traverse City (23-33) on Thursday night.
LHP Jon Jones (2-1) made his second start in 2016 for Gateway and delivered a solid performance, throwing five scoreless innings while allowing just three hits.
The Beach Bums countered with RHP Kramer Champlin (3-5), who cruised through the first two frames by retiring six in a row.
The third inning proved to be a very different story. Ben Waldrip recorded Gateway’s first hit with a single to start the frame. Josh Bunselmeyer then laced a double to deep right as Waldrip went to third base. Logan Davis stepped in and grounded an infield single to the left side as Waldrip raced in with the first run of the ballgame.
With one out, Zach Lavy delivered an two-run double to deep centerfield to score both Bunselmeyer and Davis. Brandon Thomas capped off the inning with an RBI double of his own to extend Gateway’s lead to 4-0.
After LHP Chris Scarlett allowed a run in the sixth, Gateway’s bullpen buckled down to shut the door. RHP Jordan Wellander shined once again as he tossed a pair of scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth.
In the ninth, RHP Will LaMarche came on for his second save opportunity of the season. He would allow the tying run to come to the plate in Traverse City’s Markos Derkes, but he struck out Derkes to end the game.
The Grizzlies and Beach Bums play the final game of their three-game set tomorrow night with first pitch at 6:05 p.m. Gateway sends LHP Corey Kimes (4-2, 3.98 ERA) to the mound against Traverse City RHP Dylan Stoops (5-3, 4.17 ERA).
The game can be heard on the Grizzlies Radio Network, which airs Thursday on 1400 AM KJFF and online at www.GatewayGrizzlies.com/Radio. Sam Levitt has the play-by-play call.
