Luke Weaver named Texas League Pitcher of the Week

by Press Release

Springfield, MO – The Texas League announced on Monday that Springfield Cardinals RHP Luke Weaver has been named the Texas League Pitcher of the Week for May 30 – June 5. Weaver joins RHP Corey Baker (April 25 – May 1) as the first two Cardinals to capture a league weekly award this season.

Weaver, 22, made his Double-A debut with a dominant start against the Frisco RoughRiders on Sunday, June 5, registering a career-high 10 strikeouts through 7.1 scoreless innings. He allowed only four hits with no walks, while not enabling a single runner to advance past first base until an 8th-inning double. Weaver followed the double in the 8th with his 10th strikeout to close his incredible debut.

The DeLand, Florida native joined Springfield on Saturday after starting the season on the Disabled List due to a left wrist injury. Following a fantastic 2015 season with High-A Palm Beach, the 2016 Major League Spring Training Non-Roster Invitee entered the season ranked by MLB.com as the Cardinals #3 overall prospect.

After a standout career at Florida State University, the Cardinals selected Weaver in the 1st round (27th overall) of the 2014 June Draft. He is scheduled to start next at Hammons Field this Saturday, June 11 at 6:10pm, which also features the Vision Clinic Carlos Martinez Bobblehead Giveaway (2,000).
