Redbirds Win 1-0 Thriller over New Orleans

by

Deck McGuire followed Arturo Reyes’ stellar outing Monday afternoon with a gem of his own Tuesday night, working seven shutout innings and scattering six hits in a 1-0 Memphis win over the New Orleans Zephyrs (Triple-A Marlins) at AutoZone Park.

McGuire did not issue a walk and struck out five in the game. The Redbird starting pitchers have worked 15-straight scoreless innings over the last two games after Reyes threw eight shutout frames in the finale at Las Vegas. The outing matches McGuire’s season high for innings pitched, which he did two other times including his last time out at Salt Lake.

Charlie Tilson reached base four times in the game and had the eventual game-winner in the seventh inning when he singled home Alex Mejia with two outs, who doubled to start the inning. Mejia moved to third on a Matt Williams sacrifice bunt, and after a groundout and an intentional walk to pinch-hitter Jose Martinez, Tilson singled to left field for the game’s only run.

Mejia also had two hits in the contest. The Redbirds won with five hits as a team, and Memphis is now 5-22 this season when being outhit by its opponent.

During his outing, McGuire benefitted from a key double play in the third inning, and Tilson threw a runner out at the plate via Mejia in the fourth to keep the game scoreless.

Miguel Socolovich walked the leadoff batter in the eighth and saw a runner reach via error, but the Redbirds turned two and induced a lazy flyout to end the Zephyr threat.

Sam Tuivailala picked up his fifth save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.

Memphis and New Orleans continue their four-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 (CT). The homestand features all-you-can-eat wings with a special ticket purchase on Thursday, June 2 and a replica Cardinals 1946 World Series ring giveaway and postgame fireworks on Friday, June 3.

Friday is also FedEx St. Jude Classic Theme Ticket night, and for $30 fans can get a Field Box ticket to the game and a one-day ticket to the upcoming golf tournament. The first 1,000 also receive a “Hush Y’All/Loud Y’All” golf paddle, and the Redbirds will be auctioning game-worn golf-themed jerseys and hats with proceeds benefiting the Redbirds Community Fund.
