Grizzlies Hammer Wild Things In First Win of 2016

by
SAUGET, Ill. – Along with solid starting pitching, the Gateway Grizzlies used a trio of homers on Saturday night to beat the Washington Wild Things 10-3 at GCS Ballpark.
With the score tied at 1-1 heading into the fourth inning, Gateway’s offense would explode for nine runs in the next three frames. In the fourth, Cody Livesay delivered an RBI double to put Gateway on top, 2-1. Craig Massoni then blasted a deep three-run homer to left field to extend the Grizzlies’ lead to 5-1.
Gateway’s bats were just getting cooking. In the fifth, Brandon Thomas popped a two-run shot over the right field wall to give the Grizzlies a 7-1 lead. In the sixth, Vin Guglietti rocketed a fly ball down the left field line that just tucked inside the foul pole for an opposite-field home run. Guglietti’s three-run homer put Gateway ahead 10-1.
On the mound, RHP Will Landsheft was solid in his Frontier League debut. He gave up just three hits and a single run in six innings of work, while striking out five batters. He did a nice job dancing in and out of trouble all evening, as he allowed at least one baserunner in each frame.
RHP Nate Carter and RHP JaVaun West both chipped into the effort with scoreless innings in relief of Landsheft.
The Grizzlies and Wild Things play the rubber game of their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at GCS Ballpark. First pitch is at 3:05 p.m. LHP Sasha Kuebel makes his debut for the Grizzlies while Washington sends RHP Chase Cunningham to the mound.
The game can be heard on the Grizzlies Radio Network, which airs tomorrow on 1400 AM KJFF and online at  www.GatewayGrizzlies.com/Radio. Sam Levitt will call the play-by-play.
