St. Charles, Mo – After a long road stretch spanning from January 22nd until February 28th, the Lindenwood Lions Gymnastics team took on the University of Illinois at home.

Lindenwood began the home meet on the vault getting strong scores from Rachel Zabawa (9.800) and Kayla McMullan (9.850). They were followed by two very good scores of 9.750 from both Samantha Borges and Aubree Horn helping tally a final score on vault of a 48.775.

For Illinois they were headlined on vault by Giana O’Connor and Erin Buchannan who both scored a 9.875 and right behind them was Lizzy LeDuc’s 9.825 score leading the team to a 49.050.

The next event for Lindenwood did not go as planned. The uneven bars was troublesome as the team was only able to pull off a 46.725, with half the team not scoring above a 9.000 score it would give Illinois a huge lead in the scores after every single lady in the even for Illinois scored over a 9.125 which lead Illinois to a score of 48.525.

Lindenwood faced an uphill battle after that, but a near perfect performance from Katey Oswalt on the beam gave hope. She would pull off a school record score for the event of a 9.900 (though one judge said it was a 9.95). She was backed by two very solid performances by Lauren Cartmell and Alicia Floyd with their 9.825 scores. Their final score on beam was a 49.000.

However despite one blunder on the beam from Illinois Heather Foley on beam (9.175) her score would not hurt the squad when the trio of Sunny Kato, Lizzy LeDuc, and Giana O’Connor all scored a 9.900 or higher ( Kato and LeDuc scored a 9.925). Final score for beam was a 49.400.

The final even for Lindenwood was the floor routines where they would score better than Illinois overall. Four girls would score a 9.800(Samantha Borges and Hannah Rector) or higher (Katey Oswalt-9.825, Rachel Zabawa-9.875). Giving them a 49.050 score compared to Illinois 48.900, who saw only three girls score a 9.800 or higher.

The final results ended up with:

University of Illinois – 195.875

Lindenwood University – 193.550

Four girls participated in the All Around:

Illinois – Erin Buchanan (39.200), Lizzy LeDuc (38.700), Giana O’Connor (39.375)

Lindenwood – Katey Oswalt (38.025)

I spoke with Katey Oswalt after the meet about the teams performance and when they will next have a home meet.
