Cardinals Invite 61 Players To Spring Training

The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they plan to open Spring Training next month in Jupiter, Fla. with 61 players in Major League camp, including 22 non-roster invitees.   Cardinals’ pitchers and catchers will report on Wednesday, February 17 and the full squad is to report on Monday, February 22 with the team’s first full-squad workout scheduled for the following day.

Of the 39 players on the team’s Major League roster, six are new to the organization, including pitchers Jayson Aquino, Matt Bowman, Mike Leake and Seung Hwan Oh, catcher Brayan Pena and infielder Jedd Gyorko.

A total of 33 pitchers (including 12 non-roster invitees), 8 catchers (5 non-roster), 13 infielders (4 non-roster) and 7 outfielders (1 non-roster) make up the roster of players set to appear in Major League camp.

The Cardinals will also be conducting their Spring Training Early Program (S.T.E.P.) for minor league prospects starting on February 26.

Among the 26 invitees to this year’s S.T.E.P. camp are pitchers Sandy Alcantara, John Brebbia, Junior Fernandez, Jack Flaherty, Derian Gonzalez, Josh Lucas, Mike Mayers, Alex Reyes, Arturo Reyes, Rowan Wick and Jacob Woodford; catchers Christopher Chinea, Jose Godoy, Ryan McCarvel and Brian O’Keefe; infielders Eliezer Alvarez, Paul DeJong, Juan Herrera, Chris Jacobs, Oscar Mercado, Darren Serefina and Edmundo Sosa; outfielders Harrison Bader, C.J. McElroy, Nick Plummer and Magneuris Sierra.

The remainder of the Cardinals minor league pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report on Monday, March 7 and the full squad on Wednesday, March 9.

The 2016 season marks the 19th year that the Cardinals will be conducting Spring Training at their complex in Jupiter, Fla.  The Cardinals will play an exhibition game onWednesday, March 2 vs. Florida Atlantic University before opening Grapefruit League play on Thursday, March 3 against the Miami Marlins.
