Potential Names for St. Louis MLS Team

by

As St. Louis moves forward without the NFL, a new movement begins to bring Major League Soccer (MLS) to St. Louis and the vast soccer fan base that resides here.

While my previous article Goodbye NFL, Hello MLS  talked about the basics to building a soccer stadium (though that will be discussed more in depth soon so stay tuned) this article is about potential team names, and even a potential jersey that could be is team stores in the not so distant future.

However before we dive into the names I would like to thank the fans who shared the article mentioned above. It was shared by nearly 4,000 Facebook users directly from Arch City Sports website and social media sites, and was even mentioned by the MLS. So obviously a huge thank you to all of you. Now back to team names!

Side note: I do not like seeing the initials SC at the end of a soccer team (though love them as my initials) I only like FC or nothing. Nor do I like team nicknames/mascots like the New York Red Bulls, Chicago Fire, and especially, Colorado Rapids (the owner is a piece of…work).

First team name: St. Louis United

The name is classy, but also true of what St. Louis should be symbolic of, unity. This city has faced such nationally published slaps in the face by people who know/ care little about this city. We’ve seen moments that could of broken this cities spirit in recent years but they didn’t. We as a city have risen from tragedy and dark times before, and can now look to a new symbolic team that our city can rally behind and remind us that this city will never let others tell us what we are and what we aren’t…like being only a two-sport city.

Oh what’s that fans? what would our jerseys maybe look like? Well I’m glad you brought that up.

The second team name: Archers FC

Now I know I said I do not like nicknames/mascots for a soccer team, however this doesn’t really qualify for that since it is just the teams name. If it was St. Louis Archers FC then yes, I’d be a hypocrite. The name is rather simple since if the team is still downtown the Arch would be clearly visible. If the team is not downtown then maybe go a different route like…

Final team name: Gateway FC

My third and final potential team name. If the team is not located in the downtown area and is built elsewhere in the St. Louis area(like a nice vacant lot in Fenton). Then a broader name may be more fitting.

So there you have it. Now for you the fans. I am not the most creative person ever so I am calling for you, the fans, to design your own jerseys and share them and give us what your team name would be.

And a final note: Please go and support our local USL team, Saint Louis FC (facebook page , website ). Sellout the place and get rowdy. It’s a great time for sports fans and soccer fans. If they keep selling out games and show a clear a support from the city, it shows the MLS that this city deserves the nod for an MLS expansion team.

I love St. Louis United, but not a huge fan of that jersey design

St. Louis United is good, but that kit would be horrid.

Honestly, though, many times when MLS expands into an area that has a current or past USL or NASL team the MLS team is named after it. So AC St. Louis or St. Louis FC would be very likely.

Thank you for starting this conversation. No name will make everyone happy, but at least we can all agree that any name will be OK as long as we get a MLS team. I like the name United, but there are already three MLS United teams – DC, Minnesota and Atlanta. My vote of the three mentioned is Archers even though it’s the name of teams at Forest Park Community College. I prefer soccer club over football club. It’s unfortunate our current team has football club on its logo because everyone who sees it and doesn’t know soccer think I’m supporting an American football team. I also prefer mascots because that’s what most Americans prefer and I want to grow our sport so that everyone in our community becomes a fan. Personally I love th ename Wolves, but St. Louis Archers sounds pretty cool.

St. Louis United is SLU, we already have one of those. I like Gateway FC, or just promote the STL FC club. I’d love if the teams unofficial nick name would be the Steamers.

What about STLFC? Oh, wait a minute…
