by Brian Ledford

The flat-track local campaigns for the Arch Rival Roller Girls and GateKeepers Roller Derby continue this Saturday and there is the possibility that both leagues’ respective standings will contain a three-way tie by evening’s conclusion.

The 6:30 p.m. derby double header at Midwest Sport Hockey at Queeny Park (570 Weidman Rd., Ballwin, MO), is highlighted by the women’s main event as the M-80s (1-0) battle the Stunt Devils (0-1). Preceding that match-up is the continuation of GKRD’s “Turf Wars” schedule as the Central West Friends (1-0) skates against the Creve Coroners (0-1).

Both leagues’ six-event regular season hits round number three this weekend and the current respective leaders aim to notch their second victory of the 2015-16 docket.

The M-80s vaulted into first place in the ARRG standings with its 185-139 triumph over the Smashinistas in early-December. The red-flanneled rollers’ dominance late in the first period over the then-undefeated Smashies, illustrated by a 37-point half time lead, defined the narrative. Jammer D’Manda Flapjack finished the game with 109 points followed by Let’s Get Beard’s 35. Snotface, Lone Pine and Paul Funyun also contributed to the scoring ledger.

However, the main component of the M-80s’ fast sprint out of the gates was its blocking battalion, paced by Lumberjam, Oak, C’mon!?!, Warpath O’ Jen, Bad Adze, Arcane Sugar, Jenforcer, Quicksandz, Trigger Happy Jackie and Yoko Low Blow, who seek the keep the team’s record unblemished.

Standing in the way are the defending ARRG champions, the Stunt Devils, who return back to the flat-track Saturday after an idle December. In its November season-opener, the Stunts tussled with the Smashinistas and fell by five points (178-173) in a game that had ten lead changes and wasn’t decided until one minute remained.

Stunt jammers CupQuake and Bricktator scored 70 and 68 points, respectively, while Psychokid D Freakout collected 41. Blocking will be paced this weekend by Shear-Ra Powers, Aceta Menacin, Ninja Sass ‘Em, Danisaurus Rex, Aggie Wartooth, Peg E. Sass, Cruella Belle-ville, Sound-Proof, Midnight Smack, Stormin’ Norma and Momentum Mori.

With the Smashinistas (1-1) idle this round, if the Stunts pick up their first win Saturday night, the ARRG standings would have a three-way tie as all teams will sport identical 1-1 records.

The same gridlock is possible with the men’s match-up. The Central West Friends launched its franchise opener in November with a 200-176 victory over the Raiders of Forest Park. The CWF walls, set-up by Monster Jam, SoGo, Perc In Boots, Fruit Wallup, Great Stromboli, Cpt. Kramerica, Red Rider, Poppa Choppa and Blue Suede Bruise will assist the jamming combination of Bower Ranger and Mailbox as they look to keep their record spotless.

Saturday’s opponent, the Creve Coroners, dropped a decision to the aforementioned Raiders two weekends ago at the team’s training facility in South St. Louis. Magnum P.I.M.P, Gnat King Kill and Indy are projected to don the star for jamming while blockers Double Excel, Inquadable Hulk, Boney Fangers, Specs, Irving, Jagged Little Will, O’ Connell, Krazy Kid Curry and Cat Daddy lead the charge.

This line-up is certainly ready to notch its first win of the campaign and knock the Turf Wars’ standings into a three-way kerfuffle.

Tickets are $10 (children 10 and under get in free) and can be purchased either at the door or AT THIS LINK.

Arch City Sports will have a full recap of both games on Sunday.
