Tewell Powers Grizzlies To Win As Spencer Shines On Mound

Tyler Tewell blasted two home runs to help the Gateway Grizzlies cruise to a series opening 7-1 win over the Southern Illinois Miners on Tuesday night at GCS Ballpark.

The Grizzlies (40-50) have now won 10 of their past 13 games. LHP Jordan Spencer (3-1) cashed in another solid performance to lead the way. The Gateway offense helped the southpaw out with three home runs that led to all seven runs.

Two of those long balls came in the first inning. Gateway jumped on LHP Ryan Brockett (3-3) for five runs on four hits in the first inning. Cody Livesay and Seth Heck started things off with back-to-back hits before Ben Waldrip brought them home with a big blast. Waldrip launched his 10th home run of the season to right field to give Gateway an early 3-0 lead.

That was just the start of things for the Grizzlies. Blake Brown followed the home run with a walk and came around to score when Tyler Tewell also left the yard for his seventh home run of the season. Tewell yanked his homer down the right field line and gave Gateway a 5-0 lead after one inning.

That was all the run support that Spencer would need. The Oregon native allowed a base runner in each of the first five innings, but continued to pitch out of trouble. Niko Vazquez went the opposite way for a solo home run in the sixth inning, but that was all the damage Spencer allowed. His outing finished after seven innings in which he allowed one run on four hits.

Tewell went deep for a second time in the sixth inning. Brown led off the inning with a single and Tewell brought him around after he once again launched one over the right field fence. His homer gave Gateway a 7-1 lead.

Ross Spurgeon and Pete Perez pitched scoreless innings in relief to preserve the victory. Tewell led the way with two hits and four runs batted in.

The Grizzlies and Miners continue their series Wednesday night. RHP Dakota Smith (2-3, 4.88) will pitch for Gateway and RHP Jarett Miller (5-3, 3.46) will take the mound for Southern Illinois. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Sam Levitt and Kevin Schaefer will call the action on the Grizzlies Radio Network, which airs on 101 ESPN’s digital channels and 1400 AM KJFF.
