Grizzlies and Aviators Suspended In Extra Innings

by

Sunday night’s game at GCS Ballpark between the Gateway Grizzlies and the Rockford Aviators was suspended due to weather with the score tied 2-2 in the top of the 11th inning. The game will resume when the Grizzlies travel to Rockford on July 7.

The Grizzlies (13-25) were going for the series victory after winning in walk-off fashion Saturday night. Rockford (24-12) was attempting to take its second series victory at GCS Ballpark this season.

RHP Tyler Thompson started the game for Gateway and scattered nine hits in 6.2 innings of work. He surrendered one of his two runs in the first inning.

After beginning the night with a strikeout, Ja’ron Shepherd singled off Thompson with one out. A lineout followed, but Devon Rodriguez doubled to plate Shepherd and give Rockford an early 1-0 advantage. Thompson allowed one more hit in the inning, but escaped trouble and got out of the jam.

The score remained 1-0 until Rockford added another run in the sixth inning on a Gateway throwing error. Brian Bistagne singled to start the inning and later stole second. He then scored when Ryan Soares threw the ball into stands off a Tyler Smith groundout.

The Grizzlies quickly answered in the bottom half of the sixth. Seth Heck reached on an error and advanced to third when Cody Livesay bunted for a single and both runners advanced a base on a throwing error. Heck scored on a wild pitch and Blake Brown singled up the middle to tie the game at 2-2.

That’s where the score stood when rain suspended the game before the start of the 11th inning. International tie-breaker rules with come into effect when the game resumes.

The Grizzlies return to action at GCS Ballpark on Tuesday night when they begin a 3-game series against the Southern Illinois Miners. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
