It was announced on Monday that the Southern Illinois Miners’ ace and reigning Pitcher of the Year Matt Bywater has been named the Frontier League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending on June 14th, as chosen by Pointstreak, the official statistical provider of the Frontier League and the Independent Professional Baseball Federation.
The Thousand Oaks, California native earned his second Pitcher of the Week nod by making history on Friday night against the Evansville Otters, walking two and striking out 10 in the first nine-inning no-hitter in Miners franchise history and the second no-hitter overall for Southern Illinois. It was also the 25th no-hitter in Frontier League history.
Currently 5-0 with a 1.46 ERA on the season, Bywater leads the league with 51 strikeouts against just 13 walks in only 43 innings pitched, having struck out 10 or more batters in three consecutive starts. His five wins are more than any other pitcher entering play on Tuesday, while his ERA ranks fourth among qualifying pitchers. He previously won the Pitcher of the Week award just before the All-Star break last season.
The Miners are on the road in Washington to take on the Wild Things in a three-game series beginning tonight at 6:05 p.m. CT.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2014 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
