Kings Cup Preview: STL FC v Louisville City FC

LAST TIME OUT: Saint Louis FC defeated NASL member Minnesota United FC in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup, inside Marshall Wireless Stadium, by the final score of 1-1 (3-1 in PK’s). Minnesota scored off a rebound from the far post taking the lead early in the second half. Saint Louis FC would answer when Charles Ranken drew a foul inside the penalty area in the 79th minute. Bryan Gaul would bury the PK and tie the game. The game went to Penalty Kicks after it remained tied in regulation and extra time. Brandon Barklage, Patrick Doody, and Oskar Gasecki would score for the hometown team, winning the match for Saint Louis. After Minnesota put two shots wide, GK Mark Pais only had to make one save to seal the victory.

THE OPPONENT: Louisville City enters Saturday’s match with a win in their third round game of the U.S. Open Cup. Louisville defeated NASL member Indy Eleven by the score of 2-0. Nick Polak and Sidney Rivera scored for Louisville in extra time. Scott Goodwin recorded the shut out.

THE SERIES: Saturday’s game will be the third of four meetings between Saint Louis and Louisville this season. The Eastern Conference rivals kicked off the 2015 USL campaign on March 28, with LCFC taking the game by the score of 2-0 at Slugger Field. The second matchup featured a game where players battled heavy rain and winds. Saint Louis and LCFC recorded a 3-3 draw on May 24.

HOME STAND ENDS: It’s been a busy month of May for Saint Louis FC, as the team will have played six games in a three-week span when the calendar flips to June. STL FC closed out a five-game homestand when it defeated Minnesota United FC in U.S. Open Cup action on Wednesday night in PK’s. Their next home game will be June 13th against the Harrisbug City Islanders.
