Lopez Dominant As Miners Top Windy City

by Jason Guerette
The Southern Illinois Miners got another brilliant start from Adam Lopez, who improved to 3-0 by shutting out the Windy City ThunderBolts over eight innings in a 1-0 win at Standard Bank Stadium in Crestwood, Ill. to give the road team their first shutout in 2015.

The only offense the Miners needed came in the fifth inning. With one out, Steve Marino worked an eight-pitch at-bat against Windy City starter Travis Tingle (0-1) before singling to right field. On a hit-and-run play, Marino made it to third on Sako Chapjian’s single. Toby DeMello then lined the next pitch into right for a single to score Marino for a 1-0 lead.

Lopez did the rest, giving up just four baserunners in his first seven innings of work, all of whom were later put out on the basepaths. Marquis Riley and Ryan Dietrich were both caught stealing by DeMello in the second and third, while Max White was picked off by Lopez in the fifth and Mike Torres was put out on a double-play in the seventh.

Windy City also saw Riley caught stealing for a second time in the eighth but then drew two straight walks. Lopez was able to get a groundout to Marino at third, however, to escape the jam unscathed. Eric Green came on and pitched the ninth to earn the save as Southern Illinois clinched their 14th series win over Windy City in their last 15 meetings dating back to June of 2009.

Lopez, who out-dueled Tingle (who finished the game), ended with four hits and three walks allowed in his outing, striking out five in the game. Marino and Michael Earley finished with multi-hit games for the Miners as well, who will go for the sweepon Thursday night at 7:05 p.m. Miguel Ramirez will look to earn the win against Windy City’s Jake Fisher.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2014 Frontier League East Division Champions and the 2012 Frontier League Champions. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007, their inaugural season.
