Surge Takes Hardcourt Sunday, Aims For Second Win

by Brian Ledford

The St. Louis Surge, the defending national champions of the Women’s Blue Chip Basketball League (WBCBL), looks to post its second win, and keep its undefeated streak intact, with a weekend trip to the North Star State.

The Surge (1-0) battles the Minnesota Black Ice Sunday at 1 p.m. at Patrick Henry High School.

St. Louis topped the Nebraska Strikers, 98-80, two weekends ago to collect its first victory of the season and push its cumulative WBCBL undefeated streak to 12 games.

In the road triumph, five different Surge players collected double digits, paced by newcomer Sam Price’s 23 points. Brittany Carter, Jaleesa Butler, Leah Cotton and Bianca Beck also collected over ten in the win.

All five will be in the mix again this weekend and will be supplemented by Yelana Rosado, Brianna Puni, Devonna Smith and Gabriella Green, who each logged quality minutes and posted points in the 18-point season opening win.

The Surge’s opponent, Minnesota Black Ice, will embark on its 2015 campaign during the course of the weekend. The Ice faces the Missouri Arch Angels (0-1) in WBCBL-sanctioned play on Saturday before its Sunday afternoon meeting with the Surge.

The Surge’s home campaign launches on Saturday, June 13 against Nebraska at UMSL’s Mark Twain Center. A five-game, season ticket package, which includes incentives, is available AT THIS LINK.
