The Gateway Grizzlies opened up their preseason today at GCS Ballpark and lost 7-5 to the Southern Illinois Miners.

The Miners jumped out to an early 6-0 lead before the Grizzlies clawed their way back into the game.

Gateway starter Kerry Kelly didn’t allow any runs over two innings of work, as did Joel DePorte. Four other Grizzlies pitchers also made an appearance.

Grizzlies outfielder Blake Brown launched a solo home run into right field in the third inning and Mark Podlas hit a two run shot in the seventh.

Gateway will resume their preseason on Saturday night when they face the Frontier Greys at GCS Ballpark at 7:05 pm.
