Notes from the Squared Circle: Happy WWE New Year?

by

The night after WrestleMania is suppose to be the start of the new year for WWE fans. Instead what we have is the same old stuff. Extreme Rules is already being littered with WrestleMania rematches with the winners being telegraphed as soon as they were booked. Is Rollins really gonna drop the title after the biggest cash in since Edge cashed in on John Cena? And trust me when I say Cena has only lost a title after holding it for a month to guys like Alberto Del Rio and Randy Orton. I can’t put Rusev on that list yet.

And let me go ahead and get my complaining out of the way now. Last week’s Raw main event on the night after ‘Mania was boring, played out, and predictable. The night was going so well with the return of Sheamus (which I will touch on later), the war path of Brock Lesnar and some of the most quality wrestling on Raw we have seen in months. Then with the show about half over, the main event begins to take shape and is set up perfectly for a couple surprises. Orton is challenged by the Authority goons and is asked to find two partners. I got excited when we had yet to hear who the two other men would be. My mind started racing. Maybe a couple NXT guys? The Dudley Boys are looking for work, could we see the return of the most popular ECW tag team? Nope, we get the underutilized Ryback and the not yet ready Roman Reigns. One of the most popular WrestleMania’s is followed by one of the weakest main events. I fear the main event potentially pushed new viewers away instead of igniting fans who tuned in for the first time after being pumped up by WrestleMania.

Now onto the good: The crowd can chant “You look stupid” all they want at Sheamus but from what I have seen across the IWC(Internet Wrestling Community) a majority of people dig the Irishmen’s new look. During the last couple of years he was being compared to Cena with his super hero like come backs and being the most protected superstar since Hogan. Seriously, look at his win/loss record. Since 2012, Sheamus hasn’t lost more than 30 matches in a calendar year. So I personally cheered a bit when he attacked Daniel Bryan and Dolph Ziggler. A heel turn is exactly what his character needed, not to mention the over abundance of baby faces at the top of the food chain leaves no room for a guy returning after six months. I am looking forward to the new crop of talent Sheamus is allowed to fight now. And honestly, he may be the guy who can pull some decent matches out of Roman Reigns.

Finally I don’t mind Cena as the US champion. I don’t think anyone really does. It has largely been a title nobody has cared for so the fact the biggest name in the company is defending it every week makes it feel a little bit more special. I also really love the idea of an open challenge every week. In doing this you get a title match every week and there is a good chance Cena defends the title for a decent length of time, and the result being who ever can finally conquer the once and future champ will get a massive boost and push as the guy who beat the champ who has beat everyone.

Now if only anyone had any idea what the status of the Divas Championship was…
