Notes from the Squared Circle

by

Before the end of the yearly spectacle of WrestleMania on Sunday night, I expected to start this post off trying to come to terms with our new champion overlord, Roman Reigns. Instead, we can all take a deep breath. The far more entertaining, deserving, better wrestler walked away with the strap, and he only wrestled in the main even for three minutes. Yes, Seth Rollins did what many hoped he would do,  he cashed in his Money in the Bank contract which guarantees him a title match at any point, and stayed true to his moniker, and was able to architect himself his first world title by taking it off Brock Lesnar, the most dominant superstar in 2014.

If you are a fan of WWE, Rollins being the top guy has to excite you. He performs nearly every night and has put on some of the best matches in the last year. He was a standout star when the Shield was feuding with Evolution and his matches with Dean Ambrose were the height of the fall. His excellent promo skills make the mandatory 20 minute opening to every Monday Night Raw a bit more enjoyable and he plays the role of the heel perfectly by making you respect his talent but also making you itch to see him get his nose punched in.

This also sets up a plethora of feuds going forward. After coming off a loss to Randy Orton, you have to expect Orton will make claim on a title match. Obviously Lesnar was never pinned and Reigns isn’t going anywhere any time soon. And of course Ambrose probably won’t let Rollins out of his cross hairs for too long. The foreseeable future is very bright for the main event.

The rest of the card ended some feuds that, to be honest, was hard to get invested in because not everyone was there to make the feuds feel whole. Starting with Bray Wyatt and the Undertaker in a match that had a plenty of fans foaming to see the two masters of the mind games finally clash. The plot thickened Sunday afternoon when it was reported that Wyatt suffered a pretty nasty ankle sprain and his ability to perform was in question. But nevertheless, it was clear that Wyatt was not going to miss his biggest match of his career and was able to tell a compelling story with the now vulnerable Undertaker. It was a decent back and forth with Undertaker finally getting the win but doing so on wobbly legs showing that the new face of fear really did a number on him.

The other marquee match of the night was Triple H VS Sting in a match being billed as 14 years in the making. I really wasn’t sure who was going to win this one and my expectations were Sting being able to take down the authority. But I really should have thought about it more because as I have stated in the prediction articles, Triple H has not won a match in quite some time now. Both men are getting close to retirement so I was not surprised to see plenty of rest holds and ring exits but what did shock me was first the random arrival of DX and then even more stunning was the arrival of NWO (which makes no since but let us ignore the fact Sting was never part of NWO and in fact, feuded with them ever since they were formed). All and all, the two icons of the sports entertainment world got in their key spots and we got a showdown we could only dream of as the NWO and DX battled their way around the ring as their respective leaders duked it out for brand supremacy. Not the best match on the card but did you miss the part where DX was fighting with NWO? If that was not memorable to you what were you watching in 1997?

The rest of the card was bit predictable, Kidd and Cesaro retained the tag titles. Big Show finally won a battle royal. Mizdow turned on Miz and hopefully we can call him Sandow again. The most popular guy on the roster, Daniel Bryan, won the Intercontinental Championship and Americas hero and last defender against the evil Russian, Rusev, was able to bring back the old glory title to the good old U.S. Of A. And of course there was a divas match that didn’t even get seven minutes despite the four biggest divas in the company being in the same ring.

I guess it was too much to ask to not have an Authority promo during WrestleMania. It ended with The Rock interrupting and Ronda Rousey hip tossing Triple H which I am sure won’t go anywhere right?

Overall, this was a show that not a lot of people were looking forward to but ended up enjoying thoroughly. With Mizdow turning on the Miz, Bryan winning the IC title, and a faceoff between DX and the NWO, I cannot think of a better way  WrestleMania should have started. I was already excited for the Raw after WrestleMania and having such an excellent show just amps up the excitement level. This is a night that historically, something memorable happens and I expect tonight to be no different.
