NFL Week 8-Five Takeaways

  1. It seems every season, the Rams fool us into thinking they are a good team. They have one above average game and I start thinking maybe they are going to have an epic turn around. While the Chiefs were able to effectively play all sides of the ball, including special teams, the Rams could not get anything going. Especially in the second half. Austin Davis had arguably his weakest game as a starter only completing 15 passes for 160 yards and there was seemingly little to no run game. Although I blame that on a stellar Chiefs defense rather than a poor offense. Speaking of defenses, the Chiefs made the Rams D look just awful. Alex Smith was on point only missing four passes while Jamal Charles and Knile Davis rushed for a combined 122 yards and three touchdowns. The Rams really do not have it any easier, traveling to the 49ers, Cardinals and then getting Peyton Manning and the Broncos at home. Strap in, this is going to be a rough stretch.
  2. I don’t think anyone had the Cowboys poised to win 15 straight but I also don’t think anyone predicted Colt McCoy would be the one to take them down. McCoy went 25 for 30 and 299 yards. Including a final drive in OT to put Washington in position to take the win. Although you might be able to blame the loss on Romo going out briefly with an injury. If you are going to take anything away from this game it is that the quarterback situation in Washington just got a lot more interesting.
  3. I think too many people (including myself) counted the Patriots out of serious contention in the AFC, but I think Tom Brady created believers out of anyone who is paying attention. That certainly was quite the trouncing of the Bears. With all the talk of Brady floundering because he has no one to throw too, he clearly showed that instead of waiting for the big names to come to him, he will create the big names himself. Although having a guy like Gronkowski certainly helps.
  4. I may write about the Arizona Cardinals every week until January because that is how big of a believer I am in them. I have a soft spot for Carson Palmer for some reason and seeing him succeed in a division where nobody was paying attention to him is very entertaining. The Eagles are not an easy team to take down and the way in which they did was spectacular. With 1:33 left in the game, Palmer hits Jon Brown for a 75 yard go ahead touchdown on a 3&5 play. The defense held up and stopped Nick Foles from putting together a game winning drive. I am really looking forward to when they take on Seattle.
  5. While there were some upsets last week, I think the one that really took me by surprise was the Steelers and Big Ben shutting down a hot Colts team. While both teams put up a combined 85 points and threw for a combined 922 yards and nine touchdowns, this game never felt like the Steelers were going to give it up. Even in the fourth quarter when the Colts were down by 8, I still had a feeling this was in the Steelers hand. What the Colts had working against them is trailing most of the game so there was heavy reliance on the air game as the colts only ran the ball ten times. Ten. This is another thing I may say every week, the AFC North is easily the most fun and closest division in the NFL. I cannot wait to see hot that one pans out.
