Late Rally Burns Miners, Evens Series

Marion, Ill. (August 13, 2014) – The Southern Illinois Miners were held down all game long by Rockford starter Kyle Brueggemann (3-8) until they finally broke through with two big runs in the seventh inning to tie the score at 2-2. But Rockford would put up four runs in the bottom half to send the Miners to their second loss on their nine-game road swing by a final score of 6-2 at Aviators Stadium.
A two-run homer in the fourth inning was the only offense Rockford mustered in the first six innings against Matt Bywater (6-4) before the Miners mounted their comeback. With one out, Marquis Riley worked a walk. Following a popout, Tyler Booth then shot a double down the left field line, scoring a hustling Riley all the way around from first base to get Southern Illinois on the board. Phil Butler followed with a single to center that plated Booth easily and tied the score at 2-2.
But a leadoff double in the bottom of the inning set in motion the winning rally, aided by a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt that made two of the eventual four runs scored by the Aviators in the frame unearned in the defeat. It denied the Miners a chance at evening up their overall road record- they came in 15-16 away from home this season- and forces a rubber match tomorrow for the second time on the road trip.
Michael Carden will be on the mound in tomorrow’s contest for the Miners against Kyle Hassna for the Aviators in a 7:05 p.m. first pitch starting time at Aviators Stadium.
