The Southern Illinois Miners could not muster a run against the Rockford Aviators on Sunday, and a leadoff solo home run by Tanner Witt held up in a 1-0 loss by the Miners at home.

Witt’s home run set the stage for a pitcher’s duel between Tyler Lavigne (3-3) and Kyle Brueggemann (2-4) as both starters were sharp after the long ball in the first inning. Lavigne, in his first start after returning from the injured list, pitched five and two-thirds innings and surrendered just six hits and the lone run to the Aviators. He did not walk anyone in the game, and struck out four.

But Brueggemann went eight innings, shutting out the Miners on seven hits. The right-hander did not walk anyone either, and struck out six batters. Southern Illinois had baserunners on in seven of the nine innings of the ballgame, including leadoff singles in the seventh, eighth and ninth, but could not get the hit they needed in just their second shutout loss of the season.

The Miners did take the series, however, two games to one, for their eighth-straight series win at Rent One Park. They have won all but one series at home this year, and will look to continue their winning ways in Marion on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. when the Windy City Thunderbolts come to town for a three-game series from Tuesday through Thursday.
