Number 10 in the Polls, Number One in Our Hearts

Saturday’s bout with a tough Rams team was possibly SLU’s best win of the year, and with that win came high expectations from fans for the AP Poll this morning. Well, after being disappointed in weeks past, the Billikens have finally satisfied their anxious fan base by being voted 10th in the nation. This ranking is the highest any SLU team has received in nearly five decades and the potential is there to climb even higher; at least let’s hope so! What makes this amazing milestone even more special is that today, February 17, is the birthday of the late great Rick Majerus. Majerus was arguably the best coach that the program has ever had and is largely responsible for the success that the program has had in recent years. Majerus still plays a role on this squad because the team’s leaders are his remaining recruits, and some of them still showed their gratefulness for their former coach by granting him their best birthday wishes on social media today.

Despite all the noise surrounding this squad, they continue to keep their eyes on the prize and their heads in the game. According to St. Louis Post Dispatch writer Tom Timmermann, when Dwayne Evans was asked how long their

winning streak was, he guessed 15. It is simply remarkable that coach Jim Crews is able to keep his team so focused and down-to-earth that they don’t even know how hot they are; they treat every game like their last and most important. That being said, while they inevitably know that they cracked the Top 10 this morning, the team’s highest priority is going to be their under-appreciated road game against George Mason on Wednesday. George Mason nearly came in and beat the Billikens at home last week, but lost in overtime, and surely they would like to even the score at their place. SLU doesn’t plan to let that happen.

This week will definitely be a challenge with two difficult games against the George’s of the A-10: Mason on Wednesday and Washington on Saturday. That being said, the team has even more reason to win two more in a row knowing that they have everything to lose, and many people are hoping for exactly that. The Billikens definitely want to remain in the Top 10 for more than a week and to do so they will have to have a perfect week; personally, I think it is completely feasible. Counting down the days between games is becoming more and more difficult and this is one wild ride to be on, but boy am I glad that we all get to be a part of it. Let’s keep the momentum going and catch the attention of even more people this week. Until next time, go Bills!
