Daily Roundup

Good morning and welcome to Day 2  of the Daily Roundup. I hope you are enjoying your daily dose of everything St. Louis sports! If the excitement of last night’s game as any indication, I’d say we are in for a stellar series against those pesky Reds this week. Here’s your roundup:

Allen Craig smacked his first career grand slam last night in the bottom of the 7th inning, demolishing the Reds’ previous 5-3 lead. This grand slam came after a long ball that was crushed by Matt Holliday into Big Mac Land and an additional RBI from Jon Jay. Tyler Lyons struggled with location early, and a costly 2-out error charged to Daniel Descalso led to 4 runs, 1 of which was earned, scoring in Cincinnati’s half of the second inning. Lyons seemed to settle in after the troublesome 2nd though, and produced 3 more solid innings, striking out 7 and allowing no more runs. Joe Kelly gets the start against Mat Latos today at 7:15 pm.

Rehabbing starter Jaime Garcia, recovering from shoulder surgery done in May, began playing catch yesterday. He expects to continue throwing every other day and remains positive about the progress he is making: “There will be bumps in the road, but it was a good first day of playing catch, and we’ll take it one day at a time.”

John Mozeliak expects between five and ten Minor League callups when the rosters expand on September 1. Be on the look out for plenty more baby Birds making their debuts as we get closer to October.

The Rams have released 10 players in order to get close to the required number of 53 that must be done by August 31st. The cut Rams players are:

  • Andrew Helmick, wide receiver
  • Raymond Radway, wide receiver
  • Demetrius Fields, wide receiver
  • Colby Prince, tight end
  • Tim Jenkins, quarterback
  • Brett Baer, kicker
  • Robert Steeples, cornerback
  • Joseph Lebeau, linebacker
  • Al Lapuaho, defensive tackle
  • Jorgen Hus, long snapper

The Tulsa Drillers overcame a 1 run lead by the Springfield Cardinals to score 5 runs in the 7th and 8th innings last night, winning the decision 8-4 and keeping the Cardinals tied for second place with the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, a Royals farm team.
