Waino!

by

A thought we can all agree on is the fact that the Cardinals’ bullpen has not been um…er…uh…perfect this year. If Adam Wainwright continues these fantastic outings, we won’t have to worry too terribly much about it on the nights he gets the start.

After signing a 5-year contract, and holding a tear-inducing press conference to start the season, Waino has proven that he is worth every bit of that contract. So far this season, he is 4-1 with a complete game, given up the big goose-egg for homeruns, 37 strike outs, and one, I repeat, one walk. I will take complete responsibility for that one, though, because I had just opened my mouth to my husband and said something along the lines of Wainwright not giving up a single walk this season. From now on, I’m going to keep quiet during the games. Well, about stats anyway.

Best moment of the game tonight was when Adam LaRoche came up in the bottom of the 6th, bases loaded, two outs, and struck out swinging. That little “YESSSSS!” from both Waino and Matheny gets the fans fired up; well, this fan anyway. Another time that LaRoche came up to the plate, bottom of the 9th, last batter Waino got to face, and got called a third strike. I think it’s safe to say that Wainwright is not Adam LaRoche’s favorite pitcher to face.

Wainwright had 9 strike outs for the night. 9 strike outs. I would say that’s a good outing. Oh, and no earned runs. Have I mentioned that his ERA is 1.93 for the season? Yeah, well it is. He’s awesome. Have you ever seen footage of him in the dugout during games? He is always upbeat, being silly, enjoying his job. Not only is he a great pitcher, but he’s a great role model and teammate. Well, that’s my opinion anyway.

So, after 8.1 innings pitched, Mujica came in for the save. Can’t say I wasn’t disappointed to see Wainwright miss out on the complete game, but something about pitch count, and keeping him healthy makes me forget that was an issue.

I think Jim Edmonds said it best on the post-game, when he said that Wainwright was “dominating” tonight. Then he made the mention of something about if Wainwright continues pitching this way, he would easily be up for Cy Young contention. I missed something when Edmonds was playing about him being such a genius, but this commentator thing is proving something.

That Waino, he’s a keeper. Glad he’s going to be around until 2018.

Go Cards!

What are you talking about Waino “being silly”?

Waino is having quite an incredible start to the season. The dude has given up 8 ER so far this year (only 9 runs total!)! That Arizona game could be considered a mulligan, as he clearly had trouble getting the ball down in the zone after taking a liner off the shoulder. In the Philly game he was about 6 inches away from giving up 1 (or 0!) runs. He has been the best pitcher in this short season, and he has been doing it with more consistent fastball velocity, a sharper cutter and better overall control.

One last thing… You’ve mentioned your brother-in-law before, he sounds incredibly intelligent. And I would bet he is very handsome too.

Yes, you should meet him! He is apparently a comedian, also.
