Good Baseball Karma

by

I like to think I have good baseball karma. On the days that I wear my Cardinals’ gear proudly, I like to think they have a better chance to pull out a win than if I didn’t. Due to my jobby job, I (unfortunately) cannot sport my STL wardrobe daily, so I throw some other stuff in there. Today it was red dress pants. The way I see it, you have to represent one way or another. That being said, the red pants restored my faith in the bullpen. Good baseball karma.

Knowing that Arroyo was the Reds’ starting pitcher tonight could have challenged my faith in just wearing the colors of my beloved Cardinals. Then Matt Adams came in to pinch hit in the 6th. Adams knocked out a 2-run dinger–scoring Descalso who had doubled just two batters before–to put the boys up 2-1. Then, the hits just kept on comin’. Jay then singled, followed by a Carpenter single and an intentional walk to Holliday. Then, Craig came up and grounded out to second, scoring Jay and moving the runners up. Beltran then singled, scoring Carpenter before Holliday was thrown out at the plate.

Top of the 7th, Mujica came out of the bullpen. I was not worried-I had red pants and baseball karma on our side. Mujica got the first batter he faced to fly out to center, and struck out the next two batters he faced. He must have heard that I wore red pants today.

Top of the 8th, Rosenthal came in to relieve Mujica. Again, red pants, not worried. Rosenthal got a strike out, gave up a base hit, but then was able to retire the side when Cozart grounded into a double play.

The Cards were able to add another run in the bottom of the 8th, increasing their lead to 5-1 when Boggs came in to close it out. Ok, deep breath Cardinals’ fans; lightning should not be striking twice. How did he look? Well, if getting Votto out on a ground out, striking out Phillips, and getting Bruce out on yet another ground out doesn’t sound good to you…then, well…you obviously didn’t wear red pants today.

I would be remissed in this post not to mention my little bit of bad baseball karma today. With MRI results coming back on Motte’s elbow, things are not looking good for his injury. If you haven’t heard, he has a few weeks to allow a low-grade tear in a ligament to repair itself. If this does not repair itself, there is a possibility of season-ending Tommy John surgery. Sticking with the theme, I’m planning on wearing as much red and Cardinal gear as possible and keeping my fingers crossed that the ligament repairs itself.

Home win #1 in the books. Go Cards!
