Go Crazy, Folks! Tomorrow’s Opening Day!

by

Tomorrow’s Opening Day! Tomorrow’s Opening Day! I’m like a kid at Christmas this time of year. Specifically, this night. I don’t even know if I’ll be able to sleep, I’m so excited.

This is the time of year that everyone holds a little bit of hope. Hope that their team is going to do well. Hope that their team is going to make the postseason. Nothing has dashed those hopes. Nobody’s been hurt and put on the DL (well, at least during a game). Pitchers still have a big ol’ zero in the loss column. Players are all batting 1.000 (which some people may want to disagree with, and say they’re batting zero, but hey, glass half full here).

Looking at the Opening Day lineup for the Cards, it looks a little something like this:

  • J. Jay  CF
  • M. Carpenter 3B
  • M. Holliday LF
  • A. Craig 1B
  • C. Beltran RF
  • Y. Molina C
  • D. Descalso 2B
  • P. Kozma SS
  • A. Wainwright P

Beating the Diamondbacks at home tomorrow would be a great way to begin the season. Is it a must-win situation? No, but it would help get all the young guys off to a good start. Confidence builder. That would be fantastic. And, Opening Day starter in Waino? Even more fantastic. I think he’s probably still working on the adrenaline rush from his press-conference last week after signing his new contract.

What’s going to keep me up tonight? Everything. Every thought that I can begin to process about the Cardinals and the potential for a great season. Jay’s going to become the newest “awe…shucks” guy out in center. Matt Carpenter may begin to wear batting gloves when he bats. Holliday is going to get that junebug (see my previous post if you are confused). Craig is going to be a solid force at first. Beltran is going to hit his 350th homerun, and then add some more onto that. Yadi’s going to continue to dominate at the catching position, and show us all who the best all-around catcher is in MLB. Descalso is going to carry on being known as “Dirty Dan” as long as he’s playing (and turning double plays in his sleep) with “Stinky Pete” AKA Kozma. Waino’s going to get his 100th win, and be in contention for the NL Cy Young.

They even have a little good luck charm: the #6 Stan patches everyone in uniform will be wearing.

Overall, I’m calling a World Series run here in about 6 months. Hey, anything’s possible….I have hope.

Happy (almost) Opening Day!
